Freddy Fender Released From Hospital

(1/31/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Freddy Fender was released from University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday (January 30) after undergoing successful kidney transplant surgery less than a week ago.

"Mr. Fender's recovery has gone exactly according to the textbook," said hospital spokesperson Leni Kirkman. "He will make regular visits back to the hospital for blood tests and routine follow-ups, but his doctors say he should be able to start getting back to his regular routine over the next couple of months."

Fender is planning to travel to Los Angeles for the Grammy Awards on February 27. The singer's most recent album, La Musica De Baldemar Huerta, is nominated in the category of best Latin pop album of the year.
